Middle East - Two steps forward (by Helios)


In the Middle East, cooperation is key to improving the efficiency and capacity of airspace. Middle East director Alan Corner from aviation consultancy Helios highlights two major ATM initiatives recently launched.

Whilst there are many challenges in the aviation industry that can be resolved by individual air navigation service providers, improving the efficiency and capacity of airspace is not generally one of them. In Europe, regional collaboration is driven through legislation and coordinated by a plethora of agencies or other bodies. This is not always the case elsewhere in the world, including the Middle East.



Nevertheless the need to work together is well understood. A point repeatedly made by senior industry figures we interviewed as part of the first-ever ATM Middle East survey for Air Traffic Management magazine. The ability to work together has also been demonstrated by a number of successful regional initiatives over the past decade, notably the Middle East Regional Monitoring Agency (MIDRMA), which maintains a central registry of State RVSM approvals of operators and aircraft. Other more ambitious initiatives (including ArabControl) have struggled to get beyond the feasibility stage because there has not been a vehicle to implement them, but this is changing.

The WAM system for Narita International Airport in Tokyo has been fully operational

ERA Company announced that its WAM system deployed for TMA of Narita International Airport in the Japanese capital of Tokyo had achieved fully operational status. The installation of the system fulfils all the specific demands required by the tendering process which ERA won in cooperation with the Japanese company Toshiba. Narita is the fourth ERA/Toshiba project in four years following the airport surface system in Osaka Itami, the Height Monitoring System (HMU) in Okayama and the MLAT system at Ch?bu Centrair Airport in Nagoya.

“Airbus Little Engineer” initiative inspires next generation of technical knowhow for aerospace sector

Giving tomorrow’s aviation leaders a taste of the excitement of the industry through robotics and technical workshops is a cornerstone of “Airbus Little Engineer” initiative that was created to engage the future talent of this region in science, technology and engineering.

A highlight of this year’s Dubai Airshow program is the Future Day that took place on Thursday November 12 during which “Airbus Little Engineer” workshops were held at the Dubai Airport Free Zone pavilion in collaboration with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, Mubadala and the UAE Space Agency.

ZODIAC AEROSPACE opened a new facility in Dubai

Zodiac Aerospace inaugurated a new facility ‘Zodiac Aerospace Services Middle East’ on November 9, 2015 during the Dubai Airshow.

“The new 4,500 square meters site in Dubai South will allow Zodiac Aerospace Services to better serve its customers in the area, by reinforcing repair and logistics capabilities and shortening its lead times”, said Christophe Bernardini, CEO of Zodiac Services.

Etihad selects Thales HUD for its new Airbus A350 XWB

On the opening day of the Dubai Airshow, Thales announces the selection by Etihad of its dual configuration Head Up Displays (HUD)  for the first 12 aircraft of its new Airbus A350XWB fleet scheduled to be delivered from December 2017 by Airbus.

A total of 62 A350XWBs have been ordered by Etihad, the first 12 aircraft will be delivered by December 2017.

Oman Air signs with Airbus for A330 cabin upgrades

Oman Air has signed an agreement with Airbus to upgrade the cabins of its A330s. This interior modernization will harmonize the airline’s business class cabins across its long range fleet and ensure the latest standards in its in-service A330s. The retrofit embodiment is planned to be completed in 2016.

As part of the upgrade, the aircraft’s existing in-flight entertainment (IFE) platform will be integrated with new seats. Airbus’ Customer Services division will perform the overall cabin reconfiguration design, certification and will also supply the new business class seats as selected by Oman Air.

ExecuJet celebrates its Sweet 16 in the Middle East at Dubai Air Show

ExecuJet Middle East, part of the ExecuJet Aviation Group, is celebrating 16 years in the region coupled with 10 years MRO operations, as the company continues to increase its presence in the UAE.

The Swiss-headquartered organisation is a Bombardier authorised service facility, which has been awarded Best Overall Maintenance Facility two years in a row and best International Maintenance Facility for the fifth consecutive year. It specialises in the maintenance of Bombardier, Embraer and Hawker business jets for which it holds OEM authorisations. Currently the Part 145 maintenance organisation supports approvals from 22 different national aviation's authorities including the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and recently obtained U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 145.

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim signs Ground Handling Agreements with international operators and flight support companies.

DC Aviation Al-Futtaim, a joint venture between Dubai-based Al-Futtaim group and Germany’s DC Aviation, has announced that it has signed Ground Handling Agreements (GHA) with some of the leading operators and flight support companies in the industry.

The GHA’s were signed with TAG Aviation and AMAC Aerospace and flight support companies including HADID, Palm Aviation, Avjet Routing, RamJet, Aviation Services Management, Skyplan Services  and World Fuel l Colt / Spire Flight Solutions.

Honeywell engines and electronics to power Cessna’s new Citation Longitude business jet.

Honeywell Aerospace (NYSE: HON) will power the new Citation Longitude super mid-size business jet from Cessna Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Textron Aviation Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company. Honeywell’s newly designed engine will provide Longitude operators with improved fuel efficiency and reliability while reducing emissions and noise.

The Honeywell HTF7700L turbofan engine is the latest in Honeywell’s HTF7000 series, which has become the engine of choice for virtually all super mid-size business jets.
