STAGGERING CHANGE IN FLEET DYNAMICS BY 2025

posted on Feb 3, 2016

Industry Predictions and Implications Discussed at MRO Middle East Today

Dubai, UAE. 3 February 2016: Discussions at the MRO Middle East Conference today drew attention to what Andrew Medland, Principal at Oliver Wyman, described as a ‘staggering change in fleet mix’ by 2025, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for MRO providers. Quoting research by Vintage, Medland told the assembled industry experts that the significant move towards late generation aircraft, in addition to improving airline costs, will undoubtedly impact MRO dynamics.

Currently, fleet mix is reported to include less than 10% aircraft from the 2000s, but that percentage is predicted to increase more than four times by 2025, as newer aircraft are ordered both as a result of airline expansion and older aircraft replacement.

Medland was speaking as part of the ‘MRO Middle East Market Forecast and Key Trends Panel’ during MRO Middle East, following a keynote address from  Abdul Wahab Teffahah, Secretary General, Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO). He noted that the airlines of the region have all the necessary attributes to continue making a mark on the global scene.

“Today’s speakers really drove home a lot of the drivers impacting the future of MRO both in the region and worldwide.” Said Brian Kough, Director, Forecasts and Analysis, Aviation Week. “Key factors are lowered costs for airlines, new technology aircraft impacting MRO capabilities and growing overall fleets.”

Staffing challenges were also a focal point, with Medland pointing out that employees will require new technical skills and capabilities to maintain and repair new technology aircraft. He predicted that these will make up 42% of fleets in the MENA region within ten years, meaning that training and knowledge development should not be delayed.

Lydia Janow, Managing Director, Events for Aviation Week, said, “MRO Middle East attracts a high calibre of both speakers and attendees from the industry. As the only event of its type in the region, the key players know that this is the best place to keep informed of trends and developments. It’s gratifying to see such enthusiasm about its sessions from all sides.”

The conferences are taking place during MRO Middle East exhibition, where 278 exhibitors are presenting the latest in MRO technologies and products to over 4300 trade visitors. Among those exhibiting are Lufthansa Technik, Heico Aviation Services and Ghafari Associates.

In a move targeting the Middle East market, Lufthansa Technik used the show to introduce its new Falcon Master, a transport device allowing falcon owners to carry their birds on VIP commercial flights in a safe and hygenic manner.

“Falconry is an important part of the Middle East’s culture and heritage, it’s a popular sport in the region,” said Ziad Faisal Al Hazmi, CEO of Lufthansa Technik Middle East. “We met with one customer who had been removing rows of seats to create space for falcon transport. With this new Falcon Master he can save all that effort and cost.”

He continued, “In addition to introducing the Falcon master, we are using this show to showcase our new MRO facility which will be located at Dubai South. What is unique about the MRO show is that it is dedicated to the industry – we see all of the key maintenance providers and customers.”

Aircraft interiors Middle East (AIME) will again be co-located with MRO Middle East taking place 3-4 February 2016, at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). The event showcases cutting edge designs, innovative cabin fittings and technological advancements for the region’s rapidly developing aviation market.
