The Airport Show is being held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), Chairman of Dubai Airports and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre (DICEC).

For the Middle East airports, expected to handle an additional 237 million passengers by year 2034, according to IATA, technology is the way out to emerge as successful aviation hubs of the 21st century.

Airports in the region are investing millions of dollars toward airport technology and system upgrades to ensure seamless passenger experience alongwith security.

From  smart gates, beacon technology, mobile devices to navigate the airports and face recognition systems, to air traffic management, baggage and check in management, IP-based security monitoring, communications, ticketing, and information systems, freight operations information systems, air traffic management and airways analytics, airports are actively adopting new technologies. According to a study by Technavio, the global market for smart airports is estimated to reach $13 billion by 2019, at a combined annual growth rate of 6 per cent.

The exhibitors said during the first two days of their participation in the Airport Show, they were encouraged by the response from visitors and expected positive business outcomes.

Nicholas W. Mobayed, Chairman, Bond Group, which is showcasing green and sustainable solutions for aviation sector, alongwith its partner companies, said: “Aviation industry in the Middle East is actively embracing the latest and smart solutions, and it is a high-potential market for us. We believe that sustainable technology solutions and sustainable manufactured solutions are the way forward for airports of the future. The products and solutions we have brought here include sustainably manufactured flooring and airport lounge furniture, LED traffic signals and controls, visual messaging signs and automated robotic car park- which are all not only sustainable, they can significantly enhance efficiencies and are also cost effective. We are keen to tap into the opportunities in the Middle East and the Airport Show, where we have been participating from the time it started, is the gateway into the region’s aviation sector. We have received a very encouraging response within the first two days and are confident of a rewarding participation.”

Daniyal Qureshi, Group Exhibition Director at Reed Exhibitions Middle East, the organisers of the Airport Show, said: “More than 25 new products have been launched show this year and the show has witnessed keen interest from industry professionals, especially for the products that have been brought to the Middle East for the first ever time.  Aviation industry is more active than ever in adopting new and smart technologies and the Airport Show is providing an ideal platform for them to explore these technologies and solutions that are set to transform future of air travel.”

“With global passenger numbers expected to rise to 7.3 billion by 2034, airports need to ensure they are able to cope with the rising numbers, and, at the same time, offer seamless travel experience. Smart technologies can greatly help in delivering a hassle-free passenger experience that can put an airport ahead of its competitors,” added Qureshi.

The use of smart technology is not only contributing to enhancing passenger experience but also expected to help authorities in the region reduce 25 per cent of operational costs.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global trade body for airlines, says the increased use of devices, applications, networks and services will open up a whole new world for  systems integration in the airports environment.
